Financially Speaking Ask Alex

Submitted by Susie Latta

Fall marks the time when many Kansans have the opportunity to make healthcare choices for themselves and their family. Unless you are like me and some of my resource management PFT friends, you might find this time more challenging than exciting.

Alex is an online coverage advisor tool that you can use to make your healthcare decisions. Often the choices are overwhelming and sometimes doing what you have always done is the most comfortable choice but financially is it the best choice for you? Does it help you save money for health-related expenses in the future and lower your taxable income? The Alex tool can provide you with some information to help narrow down your choices and help you make an informed decision. Alex is available at https://www.myalex.com/kansassehp/2020#intro. Open Enrollment for State of Kansas Employees, and those on the Non-Employee State Group is October 1 through October 31.

People need to be informed consumers and shop for the best plan that meets their needs every year. I know from my experience as a Certified Application Counselor for the Marketplace and a SHICK Partner. If you are still confused after using Alex, there are Extension Agents across the state who would be glad to help you think through your options.

If you have family or friends on Medicare, Part D open enrollment is October 15 through December 7. Open enrollment for State of Kansas Retirees is October 16 through November 15. Open enrollment in the Health Insurance Marketplace is November 1 to December 15. There are new health benefit/insurance options available this fall through associations that may be available to eligible consumers in your community too. Remember, don’t doubt, check it out. Kansas has people to assist you.
