State Market Beef Nomination Deadline Approaching May 1

Submitted by Lexie Hayes

The 2022 state livestock nomination season has arrived! Market beef nominations are due by May 1, 2022. This includes market steers and market heifers. Any market beef animal, regardless of breed or gender, must be nominated to be eligible for the Kansas State Fair Grand Drive and/or KJLS. The deadline is a postmark and online submission deadline, but families need to plan ahead and get them submitted as soon as possible. Late nominations are not accepted.

We have transitioned to an online nomination system, so families will need to order DNA envelopes in advance, as well as complete their YQCA certification and the Declaration Form before submitting their nominations. The nomination fee is now paid through purchasing DNA envelopes, which means no payment will be included when the completed and signed DNA envelopes are postmarked. The deadline to order DNA envelopes for market beef nominations is APRIL 24. Additionally, no paper forms will be mailed. Families will only send in their completed DNA samples and a copy of the receipt from their online nomination entry submissions.

Nomination information for all species may be found on the KSU Youth Livestock Program website: https://www.asi.k-state.edu/research-and-extension/youth-programs/nominated-livestock/. This includes an overview of the new, four-step process, as well as a variety of resources.

1. Purchase official DNA envelopes through the online system. Old DNA envelopes (obtained in 2021 or before) will not be accepted. Instructions on skipping ahead in the system to order DNA envelopes to avoid submitting an incomplete nomination entry, before animals have been tagged, is available on the website.

2. Enter exhibitor and animal information in the online system (ShoWorks) by the appropriate deadline. This includes uploading the family Declaration Form and each child's YQCA certificate, which must be valid through 10/2/2022. It is imperative to have these documents ready before completing the first nomination entry for each child.

3. Mail completed and signed DNA envelopes, along with a copy of the online nomination entry submission receipt, by the appropriate deadline. Market beef must be postmarked by May 1, with small livestock and commercial heifers being due June 15.

4. Extension Agents and FFA Advisors will approve entries online.

The online system is located here: https://kansasnom.fairwire.com/. No paper forms or old DNA envelopes will be accepted. Families should use the checklist, make sure the DNA envelopes are signed by all exhibitors within the family, as well as a parent, and cross reference the information submitted online with the DNA envelopes.

An informational zoom session covering the new online system was offered for families. The recording may be found here: https://youtu.be/ldKxncJNvP0.

All families are also encouraged to use the Rookie Guide this year. It is located here: https://www.asi.k-state.edu/research-and-extension/youth-programs/nominated-livestock/2022%20Rookie%20Guide_updated%204.5.22.pdf.
