Community Health Corner

Submitted by Elaine Johannes

mother and baby, hotline

Community health uses science-based approaches for the greatest health benefit to the greatest number of people by addressing the social, economic and structural drivers that impact everyone’s health. The National Extension Framework for Health Equity and Well-being recommends using community development practices to ensure that every person has the opportunity to "attain his or her full health potential," and no one is "disadvantaged from achieving this potential because of social position or other socially determined circumstances." The following tools and resources can be used to improve health equity and well-being working with communities to achieve the nation’s Healthy People 2030 objectives.

SAVE THE DATE: Kansas Public Health Association conference on September 29, at Wichita State University campus (hybrid option available). Focus is on engagement, collaboration and growth of the public health system in Kansas. Check for conference updates and registration here.

SHARE NOW: Maternal mental health is associated with better outcomes for mother and for baby, but reports reveal that postpartum mood disorders (once called postpartum depression or the “baby blues”) is increasing. Information and promotional materials about maternal mental health are available here. The national maternal mental health helpline is available 24/7 (in English and Spanish) at: 1-833-9-HELP4MOMS.

AVAILABLE NOW: As part of National Immunization Awareness Month, the Immunize Kansas Coalition (IKC) is offering a new Spanish version of the Protecting Kansans with Immunization education module. The 10-15 module informs Spanish-speaking individuals of the importance of vaccinations presented by credible, clinical sources. The Spanish and English versions of the module with print materials are available online through IKC here.
