Speaking to Loss: An Important Leadership Concept

Submitted by Nancy K Daniels

As part of our Kansas Leadership Center training, we've set a safe online time and space to practice our leadership skills. We call this space the "Building Leaders Connection."

This week's guided conversation is about "Speaking to Loss" on Thursday, August 11, at 10:30 a.m. You need not be an alumnus of KLC training to attend. The link to the zoom call is here.

Why is "Speaking to Loss" an important component of leadership? Before we can move forward, we must acknowledge what is holding us back. Sometimes what is holding us back is grief and loss over what we are leaving behind. Kaitlyn Peine, Douglas County agent, shared, "In our office of 14 professionals, some of whom have been here for years, only the director has retained the same role he had 18 months ago." That means leaving PFTs behind. It means friends and community members who came to think of you as the expert in one field but now you have to turn them over to someone else and trust they won't be disappointed.

In a world of change, you each have a story. This is a safe place to share your stories, acknowledge your loss, and make a plan to move forward. The conversation is confidential; all responses stay in the room. Kaitlyn’s story was used with permission.

If you have not yet completed Kansas Leadership Center training or the 3 steps on the KLC Leadership Path, there is still time. Online or in-person training is available at no cost to you because of KSRE's Leadership Transformation grant. The only cost is books and, for in-person training, transportation and hotels. Register at Kansas Leadership Center, using the payment code: KSRE2022.
