Celebrating Your Work

Submitted by Gregg Hadley

I hope you had a wonderful Labor Day weekend.

Many people view Labor Day as a weekend of rest or a time to enjoy the last vestiges of summer. In reality, Labor Day was created to celebrate the fruits of the American worker.

Where is our work as extension professionals and volunteers captured in Labor Day? We do not till, plant and harvest the fields that feed our country. We do not build the houses that we live in. We do not start new businesses. We do not work long shifts in hospitals saving lives.

Our work is captured by the farmer and the agribusiness and food industry professionals who learn from us how to produce and distribute food more safely and efficiently. It is captured in the work of the carpenters and electricians, whose knowledge and skills began to develop in 4-H projects conducted years before. Our work is captured in that of the entrepreneur by working with community leaders to help them develop a better community for new business endeavors. Our work helps people to live healthier lives, reducing the need for our healthcare workers to put in long shifts.

We help and inspire people to improve their lives, livelihoods and communities. Our labor enables people to become even better versions of themselves. What we do as extension professionals and volunteers is simply amazing!

Thank you for the fruits of your labor as extension professionals and volunteers. Your work deserves celebrating!
