Kansas 4-H Thriving Study Update

Submitted by Sarah E. Maass

The first round of the Kansas 4-H Thriving surveys has gone out (6/11) and we are excited with the response we have received so far.  As of 6/13, we have a total of 168 surveys completed (96 responses from our 10-12 year old youth and 72 responses from our 13 and older youth).  This is great news and an amazing response rate!  For those who have not responded in round one, reminder emails will be sent the week of June 23 and July 7.

Not to get too much into the weeds, but there are two surveys that are being administered.  The 4-H Thriving Survey (full version) is geared towards youth 13 years of age and older.  Our youth 10-12 year of age, are receiving a shorter, more age-appropriate survey.  At the recommendation of Dr. Mary Arnold, we are using the Common Measures survey for this age group.  Both surveys allow us to better understand how our youth are thriving in Kansas 4-H.

As we have mentioned, this is an easy lift for you as a local Extension professional.  We ask that you promote and encourage your 4-H members to participate.  Please refer to the May 4-H Tip Sheet article for more information.

We know how competitive some of you are and we would like to offer YOUR local Extension unit a couple of incentives on promoting this.  You can keep up with the responses from your local Extension unit by checking out this 4-H Youth Thrive Dashboard.  It is kept in real-time.  I’d encourage you to check it frequently, especially around the week of June 23 and July 7.

The incentives will be based on the number of youth enrolled and the percentage of those who completed the survey.  The Extension units with the highest response rate percentage of completed surveys will receive the following:

First Place Extension Unit:

  • During the 2024 Extension Annual Conference:
    • One vehicle will be eligible for free student union garage parking
    • One free admission to Clover Night, sponsored by KAE4-HA
  • $50 Amazon gift card

Second Place Extension Unit:

  • During the 2024 Extension Annual Conference:
    • One vehicle will be eligible for free student union garage parking
    • One free admission to Clover Night, sponsored by KAE4-HA
  • $25 Amazon gift card

Third & Fourth Place Extension Units:

  • During the 2024 Extension Annual Conference:
    • One vehicle will be eligible for free student union garage parking
    • One free admission to Clover Night, sponsored by KAE4-HA

Thank you for promoting and supporting the Kansas 4-H Thrive evaluation!
