Reflections from NELD: Leading with Purpose
Submitted by Kaitlyn Peine & Will Morris
K-State Extension is dedicated to cultivating strong, capable leaders by providing intentional, high-quality professional development opportunities. Through targeted training and skill-building, we empower individuals to lead with confidence and make a lasting impact in their communities.
By nature, extension professionals are leaders. Across our system, you can witness acts of leadership in a variety of leadership styles. Effective leadership takes practice and a commitment to continual growth.
Our organization offers professional development to give extension professionals the tools to strengthen their leadership toolbox and to lead with purpose. The North Central Extension Leadership Development (NELD) program is a professional development opportunity focused on building extension leaders at all levels of our organization.
In 2025, NELD included a six-month-long learning experience with virtual and in-person sessions, including immersive sessions in Tempe, Arizona; Kansas City, Missouri; and Washington, D.C.
This year’s delegation included three local unit extension agents:
• Jenni Carr, agriculture and natural resource agent, Harper County.
• Will Morris, 4-H youth development agent, Wildcat District.
• Kaitlyn Peine, community health and wellness agent, Douglas County.
Each participant gained unique insights from NELD, and below, they share a glimpse of what they learned and how it impacted them.
Jenni said: “The NELD experience allowed me to identify both strengths and areas for growth, and to create a plan to address those areas in order to enhance my leadership within my local unit. Key takeaways included sharpening my listening and critical thinking skills, as well as being intentional about the energy and presence I bring to the office. NELD also provided valuable opportunities to network and exchange ideas with extension professionals across the North Central region, broadening my perspective and strengthening my leadership capacity.”
Kaitlyn said: “Participating in NELD has been on my work bucket list for several years. With both busy personal and professional schedules, I always put off applying. I am glad I finally applied and believe it was time well invested. Not only was the program a great chance to reflect on my own leadership style, but it was also an opportunity to meet and get to know extension colleagues in our region. I also love to travel and enjoy exploring new places.”
Will said: “Going into the NELD program, I didn’t know quite what to expect. I knew that I would be growing my knowledge and skills around leadership. I was not prepared for the opportunity to develop as a person. NELD allowed us to look within, reflect on our experiences, and learn from them for the future. This program allowed for personal growth that will benefit me professionally and personally. I am grateful for the lessons learned, skills developed, and connections from participating in this program.”
