Ignacio Ciampitti receives the Agronomic Education and Extension Award from the American Society of Agronomy

Submitted by Layne Wilson

Ignacio Ciampitti, an associate professor in the Department of Agronomy at Kansas State University was awarded the Agronomic Education and Extension Award from the American Society of Agronomy — an award that acknowledges excellence in education and extension.

Only one Agronomic Education and Extension Award is given each year to a deserving candidate. Ciampitti has been recognized for his work and dedication of focusing on assisting agribusiness professionals in selecting the best management practices for improving yields under diverse farming systems.

Ciampitti’s research involves focusing on and studying the impact of management practices on overall farming productivity, investigating interactions between plant processes, crop growth modeling and remote sensing. His program emphasizes on improving yields under diverse farming systems with a concentration on corn, soybeans, canola and sorghum.

“Dr. Ciampitti has developed a fully comprehensive and collaborative program that encompasses research, extension, education, service and leadership at K-State,” said Vara Prasad, university distinguished professor and director of the Sustainable Intensification Innovation Lab. “He effectively integrates research with outreach to provide evidence-based and timely information to producers using both traditional and new online platforms including Twitter and Facebook.”

Ciampitti is well-known for his speaking and writing abilities from the local level all the way up on an international scale. He has participated in a number of conference presentations and over 100 refereed papers and book chapters. In addition, a recent news article from PLOS Biology (https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pbio.3000918) listed him and other K-State professors within the top 2% of authors by discipline with the most citations in 2019. A reflection of not only all his prolific research work, but relevancy of those topics and scientific contributions to our scientific community.

“This is a tremendous honor to be the recipient of the Agronomic Education and Extension Award,” said Ciampitti. “My position at Kansas State in the Department of Agronomy gives me a great opportunity to work with and always learn from different people and apply my knowledge as needed. Receiving this award is an honor to be recognized for my work, but also encouragement to continue efforts in the future.”

In addition to his work at K-State, Ciampitti also provides leadership in many areas, serving as a member for the American Society of Agronomy and the Crop Science Society of America, and is the past-chair of the C-3 division as well as an associate editor for the Crop Science Journal, Editorial Board for Field Crops Research, European Journal of Agronomy, and Remote Sensing.

Furthermore, Ciampitti serves as the director of the Geospatial Digital and Farming Systems Consortium just recently funded through the SIIL, hosted at Kansas State University.
