Deadline Approaching to Apply for Hunger Free Kansas Mini-grants
Submitted by Clara Misenhelter
Submit your proposal for a Hunger Free Kansas Mini-Grant!
As announced in a previous edition of the Tuesday letter, K-State Research and Extension local units are encouraged to apply for Hunger Free Kansas mini-grants. The deadline to apply is 11:59 PM Central on January 15, 2025. Projects are expected to drive meaningful change in food security and anti-hunger initiatives and range from $5,000 to $20,000. Proposals should advance the work of Hunger Free Kansas, enhance collaboration with both university and community partners, and align with the principles of the Next Gen K-State strategic plan. Projects should also fit into one of the following four categories:
- Cross-Sector Learning: Lack of shared understanding, shared vision and shared momentum between the private, nonprofit and government sectors.
- School-based Nutrition Programs: Opportunities to work with schools to maximize funding and nutrition programs.
- Alternative Food Systems: Addressing gaps in access, production, processing, distribution, food recovery, or household food preparation.
- Social Services Access: The need to connect charitable food efforts to other social services and safety nets in a community, including SNAP/WIC/Kansas Senior Farmers Market benefit enrollment, food pantry access, community meals.
Each application should include a letter of support from a local unit director, Extension board, or regional director (whichever is most applicable); a letter of support from a community partner (if applicable and possible); and a budget outline with justification of expenses. Templates for these can be found on the KSRE mini-grant's website.
The deadline to apply is rapidly approaching. Learn more about the application, view a recording of a webinar hosted about the process, find answers to frequently asked questions, and access the link to apply online here by January 15, 2025.
